329 M ANAGEMENT of the allergic infant often includes extensive dietary restriction in addition to avoidance of milk. A milkfree formula may tilus become a major or even sole SOU CC of most essential nutrients for many Illontils. Published reports of deficiency diseases developing in infants receiving various milk-free formulas indicate the importance of an awareness of composition and nutritional properties of these diets. Deficiencies of vitamin A’ ‘ and thiamin& have occurre(1 in infants receiving milk-free forniulas not fortified with vitamins, and goiter (1U(.’ to iOdiDe deficiency (or increased iodine requirement) has i)een reported to occur

The safety and nutritional adequacy of goat milk infant formulas have been questioned. The primary aim of the present study was to compare the growth and nutritional status of infants fed a goat milk infant formula with those of infants fed a typical whey-based cow milk infant formula. The secondary aim was to examine a range of health- and allergy-related outcomes. A double-blind, randomised c...

Soy-protein formulas are widely used for feeding babies with cow-milk allergy. When they first were marketed, these formulas were the only available cow-milk substitute and they ensured a normal life for many children who were affected by the large spectrum of clinical manifestations of cow-milk allergy. Soy-protein formulas were also given to allergy-prone infants for the prevention of atopic ...

Soy protein-based formulas have been available for almost 100 years. Since the first use of soy formula as a milk substitute for an infant unable to tolerate a cow milk protein-based formula, the formulation has changed to the current soy protein isolate. Despite very limited indications for its use, soy protein-based formulas in the United States may account for nearly 25% of the formula marke...
